In this series of city blog, earlier we have shared various aspects of Singapore and its transportation system. Singapore has one of the best transportation infrastructure in the world. In this last blog we will discuss the future development that the Government of Singapore and Land Transport Authority (LTA) has planned for Singaporeans.

Why Congestion Pricing is working in Singapore?

Singapore is the first country in the world to implement congestion pricing. Singapore has been implementing congestion pricing since 1975. It began operating pricing in the form of Area Licensing System (ALS). Under ALS vehicle were charged to enter in the central business district (CBD). Within few months since the implementation of ALS traffic in the CBD area had been reduced by 18%.  In 1998 Singapore implemented more advanced pricing system known as Electronic Road

I was amazed by what Singapore has become today as one of the top global cities in Asia. It has one of the most extraordinary advanced transportation management system in the world. The Land transportation system (LTA) is using its best efforts to develop and control traffic through all Singapore.

Singapore is a very small city-state with a land area of approximately 650 square km.  Being a small city-state with high population density, Singapore has one of the best public transports in the world. Due to scarcity of land, the expansion of road would not suffice the mobility demands for the increasing affluent and urban population. Hence Singapore government has always considered public transportation as a priority mode of transportation. Along with developing public transportation infrastructure Singapore government implemented some of the key actions such as road pricing and vehicle quota system (VQS). The aim behind these actions is to promote public transportation among people. VQS controls the vehicle population growth on the roads. Multiple taxes and charges are levied for owing and driving a vehicle that make cost of ownership too high. These policies have helped to divert the commuters to public transportation. In this blog we will discuss the public transportation options in Singapore and the goals that have set up by the Singapore government to make existing public transportation more efficient.

Land use and transportation planning in Singapore..

Throughout its efforts to seek a high level of living in a green environment, Singapore has achieved the 15th world livable city in the Monocle livable city index. Developing its transportation infrastructure along with land use, several aspects took wide studies in its 2001 plan for Singapore’s future for the coming 40 to 50 years. This master plan was recently reviewed in 2013 where the focus was mainly on the land use development and high mobility goals to be achieved by 2030.

Today Singapore has one of the best air quality in south-east Asia, comparable with Europe and United States. Considering the urbanization that Singapore has gone through over the years, it is admirable that Singapore enjoys one of the best air quality in the world. Singapore has high humidity, higher temperatures almost all year long, and monsoon weather. Haze is one of the dominant problems in Singapore; however vehicular emissions are not the reason behind haze, so we will keep haze out of discussion for this blog. Today we will mainly discuss vehicular air pollution in Singapore and control technologies implemented to deal with this problem.

Transportation plays a very important role in the urbanization of any city. An efficient and effective transportation system is vital for economic growth and the quality of life. Economic growth creates the opportunities of personal transportation more accessible in turn increasing the load on the infrastructure demanding more effective management of the transportation system. Not addressing this issue can harm the economic growth of the city. Singapore has and probably is still going through rapid urbanization and is trying to deal with it as innovatively and logically as possible.
